MOFs krijgen langverwachte Nobel-status. Toegekende Nobelprijs aan Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson en Omar Yaghi voor de ontwikkeling van metal organic frameworks.

‘Zeer verdiend’ en ‘Was een kwestie van tijd’. Dat is kort samengevat de reactie vanuit de MOF-gemeenschap op de vandaag toegekende Nobelprijs aan Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson en Omar Yaghi voor de ontwikkeling van metal organic frameworks. ’Dankzij Kitagawa en Yaghi verveel ik me geen moment.’

‘Dit is een keuze die het MOF-veld eer aandoet’, zegt Freek Kapteijn, emeritus hoogleraar Catalysis Engineering aan de TU Delft. ‘Robson legde de basis, Kitagawa breidde die uit en gaf fundamentele onderbouwing, en Yaghi exploreerde de toepassingen. Het resultaat is een geheel nieuw veld waarin je met organische en anorganische bouwstenen een oneindige variatie aan materialen kunt maken voor een breed scala aan toepassingen.’  

Kapteijns reactie wordt beaamd door alle chemici die C2W | Mens & Molecule vanmiddag sprak. ‘Het is een geweldige dag voor de MOF-gemeenschap’, zegt Stefania Grecea, associate professor aan het HIMS/Universiteit van Amsterdam. ‘Ik ben persoonlijk niet verbaasd dat Yaghi de prijs krijgt, dat was een kwestie van tijd.’ En het vraagt nou eenmaal tijd om voordat je de impact van wetenschappelijke ontdekking op waarde kunt schatten, aldus Grecea. ‘MOFs zijn er al decennia, maar een nieuw veld heeft tijd nodig om zich te ontwikkelen en om te rijpen, voordat we de bijdrage aan het beantwoorden van fundamentele vragen gaan zien en gaan begrijpen waar de mogelijkheden voor toepassingen zijn.’

Ze wijst op Yaghi’s bijdrage in het plaveien van de weg naar die toepassingen. ‘Yaghi demonstreerde op labschaal de toepassing van MOFs in het opslaan en scheiden van gassen. Maar om labschaal naar praktijk te gaan en te zien hoe deze materialen zich onder realistische condities gedragen, was nog een belangrijke stap nodig, het opschalen. Dat bleek ook een lang traject.’ Dat de erkenning nu komt, is volgens Grecea eigenlijk wel opportuun. ‘Het komt op het goede moment, want MOFs hebben laten zien dat ze een essentiële rol spelen in het adresseren van de uitdagingen op het gebied van klimaat, vervuiling en energie. Denk aan het afvangen en opslaan van CO2 of het verwijderen van toxische gassen uit de atmosfeer en vervuilingen uit water.’  

Grecea’s collega, assistant professor Amanda Garcia (HIMS/UvA), was heel blij met de inhoudelijke presentatie van de Nobelprijs. ‘Ik vond het fijn om te horen dat carbon capture tijdens de uitzending genoemd werd, daar werk ik namelijk zelf ook aan. Dat de Nobelprijs naar dit vakgebied is gegaan is fantastisch. Het is een belangrijke erkenning, omdat dit type materiaal heel belangrijk gaat zijn binnen de chemie.’ Dat ze zelf niet direct aan MOF’s werkt, mag de pret niet drukken. ‘Veel van mijn collega’s bij HIMS, waaronder Stefania Grecea en Sonja Pullen werken hier wel aan, dus ik ben heel excited voor hen.’

Rob Ameloot, KU Leuven

Rob Ameloot, hoogleraar aan de KU Leuven, noemt ook de gunstige timing. ‘In deze tijd beginnen de toepassingen van MOF’s ook echt te komen. Bijvoorbeeld het afvangen van CO2, waar ik zelf ook aan werk. BASF is namelijk bezig met een opschaalfabriek voor deze materialen en wij ontwikkelen de metingen om de opname van die materialen onder realistische condities te doen. Toevallig hebben wij vorige week nog een paper in Nature Communications gepubliceerd over chemische sensoren, dat raakt ook aan MOF’s om heel selectief moleculen te meten.’ Het Nobel-nieuws kwam voor hem niet onverwacht. ‘Het zat er al een tijdje aan te komen. En het is een terechte Nobelprijs, fijn om die erkenning voor het veld te zien. Ook zijn het de terechte laureaten, niemand gaat ter discussie stellen dat zij de nog levende grondleggers zijn.’

In dat verband komt in meerdere gesprekken de naam Gérard Férey naar voren, die in 2017 overleed. ‘Samen met Kitagawa en Yaghi, zag Férey de mogelijkheden van MOF’s en samen hebben zij het veld ontsloten’, zegt Berend Smit, hoogleraar aan EFPL in Lausanne. En sindsdien is het echt gaan vliegen. ‘Je kunt geen chemisch tijdschrift openslaan, of je komt een MOF paper tegen. Iedere dag worden er twee nieuwe MOFs gemaakt en dat al jarenlang. Het is zo’n groot veld en ook zo’n leuk veld om in te werken, er zijn oneindig veel mogelijkheden om nieuwe materialen te maken. En met de komst van AI en computationele methoden neemt dat alleen nog maar toe. Dankzij Kitagawa en Yaghi verveel ik me geen moment.’
